How to Prepare Your Storage Unit for the Winter
With the winter months quickly approaching, you may want to consider what that means for your storage unit. While indoor, temperature-controlled storage units are typically safe from the harsh elements of winter, outdoor storage units are not as lucky. Follow these winter storage tips to keep your unused items in good condition throughout the cold, winter months.
What Items Need Climate-Controlled Storage for Winter?
Some of your personal belongings are more susceptible to damage from extreme cold and moisture. Here is a list to get an idea of what items may require climate-controlled storage:
- Antiques/Memorabilia – Musical Instruments
- Electronics & Batteries – Photographs & Artwork
- DVDs, CDs, & Vinyl Records – Wine or Other Liquids
- Medical Supplies – Wood, Wicker, & Leather Furniture
Helpful Tips for Self-Storage During the Winter
- Clean All of Your Items. Before placing anything in your storage unit, it is important that you ensure all of the items are clean. Storing non-clean items can result in mold, mildew, or corrosion forming.
- Prevent Moisture Damage. Although it’s always a good idea to utilize pallets to elevate the belongings in your storage unit, it is especially important during winter. As the ground gets damp during the cold winter months, moisture can seep up from the floor of your storage unit. Any boxes or items that are left touching the floor risk being exposed to moisture damage.
- Winterize Your Vehicle Before Parking It in Storage. If you are planning to park your vehicle, boat, or RV in storage during the winter time, it is essential that you winterize it in advance. Taking the necessary steps to properly prepare your car for storage will ensure that it will still be in great shape come springtime.
- Guard Your Personal Belongings Against Pests. Rodents and pests, such as mice, rats, and insects, tend to head indoors when the colder weather arrives. Most often, a storage unit will be the ideal home for these critters, especially if you have warm furniture inside. To help prevent pests during the winter time, there are a few things that you can use, including cedar wood, poison, and plastic wrapping.
- Place Personal Belongings in Water Tight Boxes, If Possible. Cardboard boxes don’t necessarily hold up the best when exposed to water. Because there is a chance for water to get into your storage unit during the winter months, you may want to try using water tight plastic bins for your items. The bins will help to keep the water out and they can be used over and over.
- Climate Controlled Storage Units. One of the best ways to ensure that your personal belongings stay safe during winter is to use a climate-controlled storage unit. A climate-controlled storage unit will prevent the temperature from getting too cold during the winter and getting too warm during the summer. These units are especially great for certain delicate items, such as electronics or antiques, that are more sensitive to extreme temperatures.
