A Guide to Storage: How Much Space Do You Actually Need?
“How much storage space do I need?” It’s a valid question. There are several factors that go into choosing the right size unit for your items, including your budget, the kinds of items you are wanting to store, and the way that you plan to store them. To help you navigate the world of storage unit sizes, we have provided a guide with helpful tips below so you’ll have an easier time narrowing down your options.
Finding The Right Storage Unit for You
Choosing the right size for your storage unit is important. In order to find out which size storage unit is the best for your needs, follow these easy steps:
Step 1: Create an Inventory of Your Belongings
In order to know which size storage unit is right for you, you must first know how much stuff you have. Be sure to write everything down so that you can refer back to it later. Count all of your boxes and identify any larger items, such as couches, tables, and bookshelves.
Step 2: Calculate Your Space
Measuring your belongings is important to the process of choosing the right storage unit. When you pick a storage unit, it will help to have one of two measurements:
- Square Feet (sq. ft.). Multiply the length and the width of your belongings. For example, if it makes a pile that is 5×5 feet, you will need a storage space with at least 25 square feet.
- Cubic Feet (cu. ft.). Multiply the length, width, and height. If your larger items make a pile that measures 5 x 5 x 5, you will need a storage space with at least 75 cubic feet.
Step 3: Familiarize Yourself With Storage Unit Sizes
Another important step in determining which storage unit is the right fit for you involves familiarizing yourself with the available storage unit sizes. Below you will learn more about the different sizing options.
Comparing Storage Space Sizes
5’ x 5’ unit: While these units may be the smallest that the majority of facilities offer, they are extremely popular. Roughly the size of a small closet, these units are ideal for storing items such as office file boxes, chairs, dresser drawers, boxes of clothes, tall furnishings such as floor lamps, and more.
5’ x 10’ unit: This unit is around the size of a small closet. It is great for storing items such as a couple pieces of large furniture, up to 15 boxes, a lawn mower, bicycle, or a motorcycle.
5’ x 15’ unit: This unit is ideal for storing belongings you may have in a one-bedroom apartment, not including the larger appliances.
10’ x 10’ unit: Roughly the size of a small bedroom, this storage unit can accommodate slightly larger items, such as a bed, dining room table, sofa, or several rooms’ worth of boxes.
10’ x 15’ unit: This storage unit offers 150 square feet of space, the size of a bedroom. This unit is large enough to fit larger furniture, several rooms’ worth of boxes, a piano, a golf cart, or even jet skis.
10’ x 20’ unit: This storage unit is roughly the size of a master bedroom, giving you 200 square feet of storage space. This unit is ideal for storing belongings you may have in a 2- or 3- bedroom apartment or home. It is also large enough to accommodate a compact car or some mid-size vehicles.
10’ x 30’ unit: If you are needing a lot of storage space, this is a great option for you. It is roughly the size of a 2- car garage. You can store furnishings you may have from a 2- or 3- bedroom home, as well as most full-size vehicles.
